Temperature Conversion

Temperature Conversion Instructions. Enter a value for any one of the three temperature scales and the others will automatically be calculated. Javascript must be enabled in your web browser for calculations to occur. Significant figures are used. Results are shown only with as many significant figures as the quantity that was entered. Temperature conversions are performed by using a formula, which differs depending on the two temperature scales you are converting between. For example, to convert 50 degrees Celsius (centigrade) to Fahrenheit, we plug our numbers into the formula as shown below: F = C. 9/5 + 32. F = 50. 9/5 + 32 F = 90 + 32. You can take a temperature using the mouth (oral), anus (rectal), armpit (axillary), or ear (tympanic). But the temperature readings vary depending on which one you use, and you need an accurate body temperature to determine if a fever is present. Convert temperatures to and from celsius, fahrenheit, and kelvin.

Temperature

There are three commonly used measurements of temperature: the degree Celsius (°C), degree Fahrenheit (°F), and the kelvin (K). The degree Celsius is the unit used most commonly around the world for everyday measurements of temperature, such as how cold or hot it is outside. In the United States, the degree Fahrenheit is most commonly used for this purpose.

For scientific purposes, the kelvin, the base unit of temperature in the International System of Units (SI) is used instead. It is commonly used with the degree Celsius because their temperature scales share the same magnitude, meaning that each degree Celsius has the same size as each kelvin.

Being able to convert between these measurements of temperature is important when traveling to or communicating with different regions of the world.

Converting Celsius

Worksheet

To convert a temperature in Celsius to Fahrenheit, use the following formula:

°C to °F: °C × + 32 = °F

To convert from Celsius to kelvin, use the following formula:

°C to K: °C + 273.15 = K

Example

Convert 22°C to K.

22 + 273.15 = 295.15 K

Converting Fahrenheit

To convert a temperature in Fahrenheit to Celsius, use the following formula:

°F to °C: (°F - 32) × = °C

To convert from Fahrenheit to kelvin, use the following formula:

°F to K: (°F + 459.67) × = K

Example

Convert 71.6°F to K.

Temperature Conversion Worksheet

(71.6 + 459.67) × = 295.15 K

Converting kelvin

Use the following formula to convert from kelvin to Celsius:

K to °C: K - 273.15 = °C

Example

Convert 295.15 K to °C.

295.15 - 273.15 = 22°C

To convert from kelvin to Fahrenheit, use the following formula:

K to °F: K × - 459.67 = °F
